The byproduct we all approve

I vaguely remember that moment when we were little kids, me and my sister hung a pair of socks in the living room, the night before Christmas. It was the first time we tried that owing to some high level tip off that my sister got through her friends in class. And to say that we were excited at the prospect of some gifts springing up from the socks was an understatement, and it also goes without saying that disappointed flooded us the next day.

And when I look back at that incident as I write this, I am all smiles. Well, because, I am sure if my mother knew about our trials of Santa calling, she would have put something there. But putting that bitter-sweet memory behind, now I do realize what a cheerful, exciting and fun filled festival Christmas actually is. Even though I could be taken for a complete novice as far as the customs related to it are concerned, I know enough that it is so much about cakes, new dresses, little gifts, huge gifts, pretty dresses, cool shirts, family gathering and friends gathering, in short the recipe of not just Christmas, but most of the festivals.

They actually happen to be the only by product, of the world wide paranoiac phenomena called religion, that I actually approve of. I feel like it is one of those moments when religion rubs it in an atheist’s face showing off the rare piece of cool stuff that it has up its sleeve. And well, yes, if you think about it, it is really cool. Christmas propagates the idea of joy of giving. The greatest joy is not in buying for ourselves but for presenting and receiving from others. Be it on the pretext of love, while deep down its tradition, we give.

People for once- well, 20 times in most of the religions here- every year have got the license to celebrate irrespective of the highs and lows of one’s life. If you have achieved something personally (or money’s rotten up there in the attic), all the much more merrier, but if things are as they always are, or things aren’t as they ought to be, these days give us a reason to forget all those chains of disappointment hanging off our shoulders for once.

If the rich live the Christmas big, the poor too have it big, for once, in their own spaces. And for me that’s what Christmas is all about. It is a reason to celebrate.

We could imagine a world without religion. (Seriously, How wonderful would that be?!?!?!?)
But would we be able to imagine a world without festivals?
Probably Not. (I would personally miss all the free cake pieces)

Merry Christmas!!!

Whose foot is it and in whose mouth?

I have grown up, and growing up, surrounded by a lot of talk about how frightening or aloof the political stage is and also how the whole stage desperately needs a complete revamp, which always seemed as likely as a snowfall in Chennai. But of late, the chain of events on that stage has been pleasantly surprising.

The rise of the party which portrayed itself as a “Common-Man Party” assuaged our common belief in the need of alternate politics. But the question that plagues my mind is that, has it risen high enough for it to really provide that alternate politics? Are those 28 seats going to be enough?

Well, Yes and No.

Yes, because, they have given themselves a shot at forming government.

No, because, that has served as the call out notice for ALL INDIA CYNICS (AIC) association to come out in full force.

And this association is exactly what bothers me today. That association is an unregistered, ever growing, highly contagious entity that always looks out for the plate of change but is highly cynical of anything that is served at them.
And let me elaborate. They today, are questioning two things.
1.     Is AAP really that ray of hope that actually sets about a change in the administration?
2.    If kejriwal, at the start of his political career, cannot stand on his word, how liable is it to trust him? Is it not greed that took him from “We will not shake hands with congress” to “Forming government with congress”?

The answer to the first one is really simple: Time. Time is bound to give answer for that.

And it is the refusal to accept any obvious answer to that second question that has me labeling that group as AIC. The gap between Kejriwal’s first statement to the second statement is not just a full stop on Microsoft word. It has got a space in between which needs to be filled with details. He might have been forced to curb his ego and move ahead with his foot in his mouth.

Before we question Kejriwal’s change of stand, we should look at the alternatives that AAP had. Here are the different scenarios/options which were staring at for AAP, as far as I was concerned.

Scenario 1:
AAP does not take support of either BJP or Congress. It therefore has eye on the elections which will take place only after 6 months. That is around the Lok Sabha elections. Now four cases are possible:

Case1: After 6 months, BJP walks away with the majority, because the nation will most likely be in a MODIFIED mood by then. AAP knows this. Tables could turn anyway. BJP has already got 32 seats now, it could win those seats again and a few more congress seats and easily get the majority by then. This is the most likely case, and the most dangerous one for AAP.

Case2: After 6 months, AAP gets the majority which means, it has to win few of BJP seats or congress seats, which wouldn’t be a good bet on any given day. This is not likely to happen owing to the strong blind support that Congress and BJP usually has got in its ‘territories’.

Case3: After 6 months, Congress gets the majority. This is the LOL case and near impossible one. Better to rule this one out.

Case4: Another hung elections with no one getting the majority. This has got as much chance as case 1.
So in this whole scenario, Case 1 and case 4 seem to be the most likely ones, making this scenario a very risky bet for AAP.

Scenario 2:

To avoid scenario 1, the first option is to form government.
Now who do they form with?

Case1: With BJP. But then, it would be a suicide mission, because, BJP has 32 seats, 4 seats more than AAP, it would be like AAP extending support to BJP. And AAP’s hands would be tied away further in this case.

Case2: With congress. It would mean, accepting support from the very party that they were against all along, but that would be a premeditated stand in which they opposed a party for just who they were. AAP could look at a more rational approach here, because they have the advantage of numbers here as the congress has only 8 miserable seats. If there comes a tomorrow after forming government, when AAP introduces a people friendly bill, and congress MLA’s reject it, they have the opportunity to expose the congress for all. And if congress does support, well, it would then be termed as ‘congress in AAP’s hand’. But if congress does pull out its support, and government crumbles, AAP would be victorious and can contest the elections with that much more confidence of a victory.

Scenario 3:

Sit in the opposition, which AAP was certainly ready to do but that would have meant congress and BJP forming the government, which could not have happened. So that took them back to scenario 1.

All these scenarios, if not anything, should teach us one thing, and that is that a leader is not he who is stubborn, or he who doesn't curb his ego and moves ahead blindly because of a word given at different point of time.

A leader is he who takes decisions in line to the existing situation, taking into account all the pros and cons and in that process, who has let himself be projected as a fool/traitor/cheater/what-ever-you-call. He has shown that his word is not bigger than his parties. If he has chosen to set aside his own promises, his personal interests and taken a stand for the public, the common man, he deserves, if not anything, at least time to prove his worth.

At the end of that time, it might be Kejriwal, me or the association of cynics who are going to end up with a foot in mouth.

Hence, I am reminded of a famous line from one of Will smith’s mediocre movies, “Fear is not real. It is a fragment of our imagination. But Danger, Danger is real”

And it so fits here.

Danger is another election. And that is real.
Fear here is the association of Congress and AAP. And that is a fragment of our imagination.
Being someone, who, from time to time, gets easily affected with the everyday news articles, this blog is like a shrine to me. I pour out all my rational/irrational, sensible/not-so-sensible, mature/immature and optimistic/pessimistic views in this blog.
Hope. Optimism. Cynicism. Three words that are the answer to so many things, are the protagonists of most of my articles. I also write movie reviews from time to time, if and when I catch them.
Most importantly, I look forward to learning through experiences and interactions that I would be delighted to have with you.
Thank you! :)
Keep Smiling and also visiting ;)

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug

First Thor, then Hunger games and now this. Sequels have thoroughly surprised me and reinstated my faith in them. After the not so appealing first installment of the series (though I loved it), Desolation of Smaug will make you love and fear the middle earth once again. It is adventure at its adrenaline rushing best. The movie is action packed with an exceptional background score, screenplay and breath taking cinematography. Though Peter Jackson cannot create another LOTR series, this one promises to be an epic Trilogy with a wonderful base set up for the third installment to breathe fire. Though the movie is 156 minutes long, it will drag you along into the middle earth and doesn't bore you at any point of the journey to the Lonely Mountain.

Rest assured, I can positively say that the LOTR fans wouldn't be left with disappointment for long after this one. Watch out for the King under the Mountain. Smaug Rocks!

THOR The Dark World:

THOR The Dark World:
I had gone into the theater with heavy skepticism hanging about the routine 'Marvel superhero' movies, and Marvel lived up to my skepticism, dishing out the same story in a new plate. And yet this THOR ended up being a very good watch for me.
THOR 2 is filled with great moments right throughout the film as the screenplay covers up for the predictable story line with some exceptionally shot scenes. This superhero movie in fact offers some relatively new action scenes when compared to its contemporaries of the very category. The winner shot for it though would be its humor for it is spread very well at every twist and turn of the movie. The background music too takes the cake here.
If you are into action movies, and especially if you have liked THOR 1, I would suggest you watch this. Hammering Entertaining

GRAVITY Movie:

When Star Wars, Titanic and Avatar came by in their respective years, the audience were left speechless, not because of their out-of-the-ordinary story line, but because of the sheer magnitude which went behind the movie production and the output that set it apart from its predecessors.

And Now, Gravity comes with that very package where we are forced to wonder if the production actually took place on earth. This movie is unlike anything you have ever seen previously and the reason is that, the movie does not take place in space, but rather takes you to space. That Feel. It is visually breathtaking and at times, you will be itching to jump out of your seat and catch onto a handle bar of a drifting satellite that Sandra Bullock is so desperately trying to hold onto.
And you will be sorely mistaken if you presume this as one of those 'slow, critically acclaimed, well shot movies', it is rather a fast paced movie with edge of the seat screenplay writing which is peppered with some crisp and deep dialogues from George Clooney and Sandra Bullock who turn out to be like the shining jewels of a beautiful crown.
Such movies, come once in a decade. And trust me completely, this one time, if I say "DO NOT MISS THIS". Alfonso Curon, for me, now takes his place among Christopher Nolan, Spielberg and James Cameron.
PS: For those living in hyderabad, if possible, watch it in Prasads Screen-4. It has got Dolby Atmos and it more than lives up to the hype around it.

Man Of Steel

Man Of Steel:

I still remember watching the SUPERMAN (1978 movie), back when I was about 10 years old. He was my very first super-hero! So when Warner Bros. announced that the reboot will be penned by The Dark Knight trilogy writers and directed by Znyder, I knew I had something great to watch out for, from "The Nolan Magic Shop".
So, finally, when I did watch the film, a midst high expectations, I was relieved that it didn't disappoint, but it wasn't another dark knight either. But let's not run into comparisons.
Znyder definitely delivers a great film, A superman film that all we fans can proudly call ours (unlike the last disaster called 'Superman Returns'). To start it off, I do have to tell you that the film-makers have tried something completely different from the contemporary action movies. The camera is always set at some different awkward angle, and sometimes it feels like they have shot even the action scenes with a hand held camera high in the air. But this is all okay and enjoyable. Because that's what Znyder usually does to his films, he brings something new to the film-making table.

The movie was shot in epic proportions (or at least it looked like it). The story line was perfect for Superman to showcase all his powers. The action scenes will set this movie apart from the others of its class. Znyder works his magic again in there (remember 300?).The background score deserves a standing applause, for, it set the tone to the entire film! ?(And I can almost hear people shouting when that background score repeats during the entrance of superman in Man Of Steel-2). There's not much humor though, that we have so got used to in all the super-hero films, thanks to Robert Downey Jr. for that, but the movie makes up with this glitch with General ZOD, the super-antagonist of this movie.
For me the cinematography was really disappointing. One just cannot accept this from Warner bros nor from Znyder, but once again I might just have expecting too much. Few of the scenes have been unnecessarily on the darker side testing my usual patient self to its limits with this experimental film making at such a large scale. And last of all, great performance by Henry cavil as the Superman. He carries the movie forward with his expressions. Kudos!
In short, Man of Steel is great, action packed, super hero stuff! Don't miss it.
